Tip Sheet

Reflections and Updates: I added a short paragraph at the beginning that describes what Google Hangouts does, and why it is a collaboration tool. I chose not to add numbers to the tip sheet, as sometimes, a user will know how to do one thing, but not another, and it doesn't necessarily have to be a linear process. After reviewing portfolios of my peers, I hope to update my Tip Sheet to contain information for the students about what Google Hangouts is, and how we will use it in the course. I do not want to make these changes now, as the embedded document is a shared Google Doc, and I don't want to make changes without Dave's input, as he may not use it in the same way in his courses that I will.
Providing tip sheets is valuable, particularly for students who are less comfortable with technology. If tips sheets with very specific instructions are not provided, there is a chance that students will give up before they even begin. My goal is to create tip sheets each time a new tool or activity is introduced, helping to alleviate tension and frustration so students can focus on the learning.

Google Hangouts is a multimedia communications tool that allows for group chat via video, audio and text. It also has a feature that allows you to collaborate on a Google Doc with participants, which is a fantastic way to create group or pair projects! It can be used with up to 10 people if a Google+ account is enabled for each of the participants. Without Google+, only two people can participate in a session. It is a fantastic tool to use for synchronous communication, and can be set up to record sessions for record keeping purposes.
